Awards were presented for three Outstanding Gardens this year:
Lisa & Greg Wenger, 101 High St. Exeter.
The Wenger’s “traditional” formal gardens offered many beds around the yard with beautiful shade and sun plantings. One cozy spot provides a bench to invite visitors to sit and enjoy. Like many gardeners, they battle with critters eating their tasty plants but use a technique of putting string lines with bells around the exterior of their property to keep deer at bay.

Martha & Ken Kiper, 4 Halls Mill Rd., Newfields
The Kiper’s property is a manicured woodland area that meanders through an acre of forest. Their “think-outside-of-the-box” approach demonstrated how rocky areas could be planted for interest. The gravel and stone paths, lined with shade-loving vegetation, lead to various vignettes and specially created spaces for family gatherings and for their grandchildren to explore and play. The award was accepted by their daughter, Brittany Drew.

Barry Brewster, 1 Haven Lane, Exeter
Barry took over care of his family home and began to add color all around his “urban” garden. His process of going to the nursery each month to see what’s in bloom allowed him to select perennials that offer eye-popping color all season long. He uses compost instead of bark mulch to add nutrition to his beds and keep weeds down. He also lights the plantings which create unique shadows all season long.
