Slime in the Hawthorne Tree

No, it’s not my new novel…

It is wetwood or slime flux spewing out of my beloved hawthorne tree.  It appeared mid-August and was noticed after sudden significant leaf drop.  Poor sad tree.  Seems there is nothing you can do for it, but it is not necessarily fatal.
