The Victorians often decorated their Christmas trees with gilded fruit and nuts. Walnuts were very popular. Fortunes were sometimes inserted to be found on Christmas morning – not unlike getting a fortune in a cookie after a Chinese meal!
You can make this charming tradition your own by making some for your tree. See how it is done at the Housewife on a Shoestring Blog. They would look beautiful on a Christmas Wreath as well.
